GENDER DISPARITY AN EDUCATIONAL SET
BACK
Girl-child education is a tool preparing
girls for brighter future most especially in developing areas. It is fact of
history that the boy-Childs have more access to education than the girl-child,
this is as a result of gender discrimination and stereotypic always in which
both parties are presented. The boy-child in Nigeria have taken lead in every
aspect and have beaten the core in education while the girl-child are left
lagging behind not because we lack ladies who can do better than the males but
because most of the ladies have not shown keen interest in education, all
ladies respected most is marriage while others have the courage but lack
parental support. It is indeed without dough that girl-child from wealthy homes
have more access to education than those from poor homes financially, but those
from poor homes can do better if only parents will offer extreme support.
In the past, education has not necessary
been a priority for the girl-child because of cultural believed, poverty and so
on. Most especially the Nigerian people believed that the place of a girl-child
is in her husband’s house, few of the males opportune to be in school are
supported by parents just for the notion that the boy-child can do better than
the girl-child. The negligence of girl-child education is the unwillingness of
parents to send the girl-child to school, some parents feel it’s a waste to get
the girl-child educated because she is a female and will certainly end-up in
her husband’s house. The literacy and illiteracy of parents is of great concern
to be highlighted. The uneducated parents mentality are influence by what they
see around them and also putting archaic beliefs at work. In the case where the
parents are poor, they would always choose the boy-child whom they claim to be
superior to sponsor in school while the girl-child engage in other domestic
activities getting ready to be doomed in her husband’s house a girl-child needs
education to acquire knowledge and skill needed to advance her status.
Girl-child education in other part of Nigeria had
been overlooked ignored and Aurn-down most girls don’t have access to education
despite the fact that it is their right. Education is a human right that should
be given to all humans irrespective of gender education is a basic human right
and have been recognized since the 1948 adoption of universal declaration of
human right. Education and development are inter-twinned or according to me!
Refer to them as two sides of a coin such that education is an instrument for
social and economic development and at the other side development which cannot
be achieve without the help of education, putting girl child education in
consideration is crucial for natural development. Education in this era is
essential just as breathing is essential to man, we are not in ancient times
but in a globalize and modernize world where every one wants to wear expensive
clothes, drive flashy cars, hold the latest phone, all these can be achieve if
we learn to embrace whatever is viewed to be beneficial. Girl-child education
is of enabling them make genuine choices over the kind of lives they wish to
live, above all the girl child education prepares a girl to be a good house
wife and a mother. There’s a saying “what a man can do, the woman can do
better” in Nigerian we’ve seen successful women like; Prof. Rukaiyatu Rurafai,
Prof. Dora Akunyili, Mrs. Ngozi Okonjowela, these are the few I can mention but
we still have many others who have given the saying a powerful meaning. For us
to overcome the issue of gender disparity as an educational setback in Nigeria,
we have to let go of ancient beliefs and embrace new beneficial ones, by so
doing, we can join hands to fight the battle against under development for the
betterment of our land. Together we can achieve greatness.
