NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF SOCIAL NETWORKS AND CELL PHONES ON UNIVERSITY STUDENT

The original idea behind the invention of social network is to make communication easier among friends and peers, it bring people of different background to share ideas and feelings, it also serve as avenue to people of with the same intend or business colleagues to meet and discuss the way forward about their career and businesses. These social networks comprises of facebook, whatsapp, 2go, Twitter, Nimbuzz among others. So also the cell phones we handle today. Before now, we have our telephones at home and offices, but with the coming of handset we have our phones handy.

           The story today is a different one because the original purpose of social media and handsets is not what is obtainable in our schools and campuses we have abuse the use of handsets and social networks. The students had made it to become an avenue for them to harass themselves sexually by shamelessly displaying their naked pictures and videos for others to see and also to share their disastrous feelings or emotions.

          Social networks and cell phones has made the students so lazy that they no longer concentrate on their studies especially the ladies. They go to street to another for prostitution in order that they should obtain money to get themselves big phones that will enable them browse the social network for chatting and pinging.

          However some students don’t research in textbooks but depend on browsing and downloading from the internet, which may not serve them well. They are too used to their phones that even when lectures are on we will find out that they are busy chatting on their cell phones. And thereafter instead of them to get the notes or go to their colleagues, they will rather chat all through the night and when it is time for exams or test they will try to cheat and at the end they may be caught in the process.

          Going by the numbers of damages that social networks and cell phones causes to the University students. I perceive that it was doing more evil than good to them. I am not saying that social networks are bad but they way the students handle the issue is the problem. If only they could handle it going by the original intention, then it will do them good.

          According to one Miss. Comfort Simon, a resident of Wukari, and a student of mass communication KUW. To her social network is a means of bringing old friends together after so many years of departure. She said she met most of her primary school mates on Facebook and that has made her very happy.

          If only the students of the University can utilize the social network very well, it will be of help to them. Rather than use it the way it will further distract them from their academic activities. Let me end by saying this; “what is worth doing is worth doing well”. As a student face your book and you will be happy you do.
